Five Ways to Set Your Nonprofit Up for Success

  1. Create a Strategic Plan That Works: Having a strategic plan is essential, but it's not enough on its own. What truly matters is having a strategic plan that works. If you already have a strategic plan, when is the last time you looked at it? If the answer is more than three months, it’s time to revisit (and potentially revise) it.

  • Implementation Focus: Ensure that your strategic plan outlines clear implementation steps. Define the who, what, when, where, and why of each action item. Assign responsibilities and set deadlines to make the plan actionable.

  • Regular Review: Commit to reviewing your strategic plan every quarter. Evaluate your progress, adjust goals if necessary, and identify any emerging challenges or opportunities. Regular reviews keep your nonprofit on track and adaptable.

2. Build Strong Relationships with Stakeholders: Success for a nonprofit often hinges on your ability to engage and collaborate with stakeholders effectively. Strengthening these relationships is vital in the last quarter so you remain at the forefront of their minds for the coming year. This includes your board and staff, not just your volunteers and donors.

  • Communication: Regularly communicate with your board, staff, volunteers, and donors. Keep them informed about your organization's achievements, challenges, and plans. Transparency fosters trust.

  • Feedback Loop: Encourage feedback from stakeholders and incorporate their input into your decision-making processes. Show that you value their opinions and are open to improvement.

3. Create an Annual Report: An annual report serves as a powerful tool to showcase your nonprofit's accomplishments, transparency, and impact to stakeholders, donors, and the community. It's more than just a document; it's a storytelling opportunity.

  • Accomplishments: Highlight your organization's achievements over the past year. Share success stories, milestones reached, and the positive impact you've made on the community you serve.

  • Transparency: Demonstrate fiscal responsibility and transparency by including financial statements, budgets, and a breakdown of how funds were allocated.

  • Engagement: Engage your audience with compelling visuals, such as infographics, photos, and videos, to bring your mission to life. Thank them in the annual report itself for making all of these accomplishments happen.

  • Future Goals: Outline your nonprofit's vision and goals for the next year. Share your strategic plans and how you intend to achieve them. Send this out in mid-December.

4. Invest in Professional Development: Your team is the backbone of your nonprofit's success. Investing in their professional development can lead to greater effectiveness and impact.

  • Training and Skill Building: Identify the skills and knowledge gaps within your team and provide training opportunities. This might include leadership development, fundraising training, or program management courses.

  • Host an All-Staff Retreat: Consider hosting a staff retreat where your team can come together for professional development and bonding, fostering a more cohesive and empowered team for the coming year.

5. Assess and Adapt Your Programs: Nonprofits should always strive to improve their programs and services. Conduct a thorough assessment of your programs and discuss how you will adapt them. This should also be a part of your strategic plan.

  • Outcome Measurement: Implement outcome measurement tools to assess the impact of your programs. Use data to refine your approach and demonstrate results to stakeholders.

  • Community Feedback: Seek feedback from the communities you serve. Their insights can help you better tailor your programs to meet their needs.

Creating a strategic plan that works, building strong stakeholder relationships, creating an annual report, investing in professional development, and assessing and adapting your programs are essential steps toward achieving your organization's goals. By taking these actions now, you can set your nonprofit on a path to make a significant impact in the coming year and beyond.
